Functional Medicine for Weight Management

By Vitality Integrative Wellness

Functional Med 101: Finding Balance with healthy weight management. Each year, a growing multitude of Americans enter the domains of overweight and obesity. The statistics paint a vivid picture: more than one-third of the population falls into the obese category, the following third teeters on the edge of being overweight, and a mere fraction sustains a healthy weight range. The urgency to quell the tide of obesity has become a central objective, fueling an in-depth exploration into existing strategies for managing and preventing this pervasive condition.

In a world full of weight loss solutions, each boasting promises of swift and effortless results, the persistence of weight-related struggles can be both frustrating and disheartening. In contrast to the “lose weight quick” schemes, functional medicine offers a path to sustainable weight loss and optimal health. This distinctive approach contrasts starkly with the norm of simply addressing the outward manifestation of excess weight, embodying a truly holistic strategy.

Is Obesity really a problem?

Given that the global count of overweight individuals now matches that of undernourished individuals, addressing increasing rates of obesity continues to be a significant focus in the early 21st century. According to some studies, the prevalence of severe obesity affects nearly 10% of the population, This situation gives rise to additional health complications like heart disease, escalated medical expenses, and increased spending on the multitude of available "weight loss" treatments.

Obesity has been linked to various chronic conditions, including type 2 diabetes, hypertension, cancer, gallbladder disease, coronary artery disease, and stroke. Hence, the reduction of obesity rates has become a central objective for public health initiatives, prompting a thorough evaluation of prevailing strategies for obesity management and prevention.

What are the conventional approaches to weight loss?

Many people resort to fad diets that require extreme calorie reduction and intense workout schedules.  Not only are diets like this unsustainable, resulting in yo-yo dieting and weight swings but they can result in the development of eating disorders, which wreaks absolute havoc on your body and results in further health problems.

The U.S. Preventive Services Task Force has recommended that primary care clinicians screen all adults for obesity and provide those affected with intensive, multicomponent behavioral interventions. Approximately 95 million U.S. adults qualify for such care, also called lifestyle modification. To lose weight, their guidelines recommend participation for 6 months in high-intensity programs that provide multiple counseling sessions with a trained interventionist and one year in weight-loss-maintenance programs that provide at least monthly counseling. They also recommend high levels of physical activity, frequent monitoring of body weight, and consumption of a reduced-calorie diet.

The recommendation is daunting in its scope and presents enormous challenges to primary care physicians and other health professionals. How can they possibly provide intensive behavioral counseling, directly or by referral, to the approximately 95 million U.S. adults suffering from obesity and its associated health complications? Moreover, who will pay for this care, given that many insurers offer limited coverage of weight management?

What is the functional medicine approach to weight gain?

Amidst the plethora of weight loss treatments available, many of which make enticing claims of swift and effortless weight reduction, it can be disheartening to find yourself still struggling with shedding those extra pounds. However, if your goal is weight loss, exploring the potential of functional medicine assistance might be beneficial. This approach stands apart by not simply brushing aside the underlying reasons for your weight gain. Instead, functional medicine support for weight loss delves deep into the root causes, tailoring weight loss strategies to align with your unique body and situation.

Functional medicine's approach to weight loss is not just a theoretical concept—it's a practical solution. Unlike methods that might push your body into starvation mode or impose unnatural routines, functional medicine collaborates harmoniously with your body's processes. It addresses the very source of your weight gain, working in tandem to enhance your overall well-being. This stands in contrast to merely addressing the superficial symptom of extra weight, marking a more holistic approach.

Am I just eating too many calories?

While it’s true that weight gain can stem simply from lack of exercise and poor nutrition, there are other reasons why you gain weight and can’t seem to shed it, which functional medicine may help address...

Common causes of weight gain include:

  • Hormone imbalances
  • Gut problems
  • Toxins
  • Inflammation
  • Thyroid problems
  • A diet and exercise program that isn’t right for you
  • A lack of eating well and exercise

Other causes of weight gain are less common, but we find that if you’re struggling to lose weight, more often than not, it comes down to one of the above issues.

For example, one of the symptoms of estrogen dominance is weight gain.  Estrogen, Testosterone, Progesterone, and Cortisol are hormones that are important chemical messengers in our bodies.  They are produced in one type of tissue and then move through the bloodstream to other parts of the body delivering “messages” for that part of the body to do something specific. When the messages get disrupted, it can have significant downstream implications. To address this issue, a functional medicine doctor might recommend stress reduction, liver & gut support, a modified diet, and sometimes, HRT (hormone replacement therapy).

What other weight gain issues can functional medicine address?

Unlike other approaches that merely focus on shedding pounds without investigating the underlying causes of weight gain or potential barriers to weight loss, functional medicine takes a more comprehensive view. When you choose the functional medicine path, your healthcare provider delves beyond the outward manifestation of weight gain, exploring the root causes, and intricacies of your body's functioning,  and then tailoring treatments to your specific needs.

The efficacy of functional medicine support for weight loss is rooted in avoiding starvation tactics and coercion of your body into unnatural behaviors. Instead, it seeks to address genuine physiological issues. If inflammation is a concern, often linked to certain dietary components, functional medicine recognizes that individual responses can vary widely. What proves beneficial to one individual might trigger significant inflammation in another. This is precisely why functional medicine's weight loss approach shines; it intimately studies individuals and their unique sensitivities.

Gut health, driven by the balance of bacteria within, is pivotal for overall well-being. Imbalances in the gut can disrupt the digestive system, leading to various issues. Functional medicine takes a deep dive into dietary imbalances that could impact gut health, treating these imbalances at their core.

What else will help in tandem with a functional medicine approach?

Chiropractic Care

A patient receiving chiropractic care. Losing weight is the result of a complex interplay of various factors. Elements like maintaining a nutritious diet, engaging in regular physical activity, and considering your gender, age, and metabolism collectively influence the extent of weight loss achievable.

Nevertheless, additional contributors can affect your weight loss journey, one of which is the condition of your spine. Serving as the central support structure of your body, the spine consists of a series of stacked vertebrae interconnected by ligaments, muscles, and tendons.

The spine holds immense significance within the body's functioning. It safeguards the spinal cord, facilitates movement, and provides the foundational framework for your physique. Interestingly, the alignment of your spine also affects your capacity to shed weight. Misalignment of the spine can exert pressure on the nerves coursing through it, disrupting the signals they transmit to the brain.

These disruptions can reverberate throughout your body, affecting crucial factors like appetite, metabolism, and calorie-burning. Consequently, even if you maintain a wholesome diet and adhere to a consistent exercise routine, an imbalanced spine can present substantial hurdles to effective weight loss.

Mindfulness meditation proves particularly effective in curbing emotional and stress-induced eating habits. By cultivating heightened awareness of your thoughts and emotions, you can discern moments when eating is driven by stress rather than genuine hunger.

Moreover, it is a valuable tool to break free from the destructive cycle of shame and guilt often entwined with attempts to modify eating behaviors. Mindfulness meditation centers on acknowledging your emotions and actions without judging yourself.

This practice fosters self-forgiveness for slip-ups, like stress-eating a bag of potato chips, as you learn to view these moments for what they are without harsh self-criticism. This forgiving attitude also shields you from catastrophizing, a phenomenon where a single lapse in eating decisions triggers an all-or-nothing response, such as ordering a pizza due to feeling you've already "messed up" after indulging in chips. The evidence is clear: obesity is a significant challenge of the 21st century, with the number of overweight individuals rivaling that of the undernourished. The consequences of obesity are profound, ranging from heart disease to increased medical expenses. Don't fall for the fleeting promises of rapid weight loss solutions that often lead to disappointment and unsustainable results. Instead, consider a different path – the functional medicine approach to weight loss. Unlike conventional methods that merely scratch the surface, functional medicine delves deep into the underlying causes of weight gain, providing personalized strategies tailored to your body's unique needs.

Functional medicine doesn't believe in quick fixes or starvation tactics. It embraces a holistic partnership with your body's natural processes, focusing on genuine issues that may be holding you back. Hormone imbalances, gut problems, toxins, inflammation, and thyroid issues can all play a role in your struggle to lose weight. Functional medicine doesn't just treat the symptom; it addresses the root causes to pave the way for sustainable weight loss and improved overall health.

Functional medicine isn't a solo endeavor. It can work in tandem with other approaches to amplify your progress. Chiropractic care, for instance, can aid in optimizing your spine's alignment, enhancing the signals that regulate your appetite, metabolism, and calorie-burning abilities. Meditation, specifically mindfulness, empowers you to overcome emotional and stress-related eating, fostering a healthier relationship with food.

The time for action is now. Say goodbye to fad diets and empty promises. Embrace a comprehensive approach that prioritizes your well-being from within. Make functional medicine your partner in your journey toward lasting weight loss and improved vitality. Your health deserves nothing less.
