Harnessing the Healing Power of Regenerative Medicine for Pain Relief: A Look into Tissue Allograft

Regenerative Medicine is a healing art that harnesses the self-healing capabilities of the body. Science has researched stem cells and how they work for over 70 years.

But in the last 20 years, breakthrough medical treatments and procedures have been developed based on the concept of how stem cells work inside our own bodies. The goal is to use an externally injected tissue to signal the body to begin a healing and repair response. Doctors who practice regenerative medicine use this treatment to restore lost function due to age, illness, injury, or disease. Regenerative medicine has been used to effectively treat knee pain, shoulder pain, and back pain.

A recent article in The Journal of Practical Medical Imaging and Management states that degenerative disc disease is the leading cause of chronic low back pain, one of the world’s most common medical conditions.  It occurs when the discs that cushion the spine’s vertebra begin to wear away.  Because the discs help to facilitate movement and flexibility, the condition leads to pain and reduced functionality.  According to Douglas Beall, MD, FSIR, chief of radiology at Clinical Radiology of Oklahoma, “Back pain is the leading cause of limited activity and workplace absenteeism.  This treatment may help patients return to a normal activity level for a longer period of time.”

New research being presented at the Society of Interventional Radiology Annual Scientific Meeting in Phoenix reports that a minimally invasive treatment that injects allograft disc tissue into the spine to relieve pain associated with degenerative disc disease provides significant improvement in pain and function over a sustained period.

The treatment, known as viable disc allograft supplementation, injects specialized cells and fluid into a patient’s damaged facet.  The cells of the injected fluid encourage the cells in the damaged facet to regenerate with healthy tissue.

The treatment requires no incisions, and patients are able to go home on the same day.  At Vitality Integrative Wellness, the entire procedure can be completed in about 30-45 minutes, and you will be able to walk out on your own with no assistance.

The doctors and medical providers at Vitality Integrative Wellness have been treating patients with arthritis and degenerative joint disease for over 18 years. We were one of the early adopters of Regenerative Medicine and have incorporated Regenerative Medicine treatment into our practice for over 7 years. We’ve seen firsthand its effectiveness in treating chronic pain.
